UAV's aren't that interesting. The control/nav/autopilot systems are essentially off the shelf, the airframes/power systems are standard model aircraft to full size aero engineeering. Nothing all that exciting. Even the sensors are mostly existing technology.


One of the big barriers to more widespread use is the inability to routinely operate outside controlled airspace as they cannot at present see other traffic. There's a fair bit of work going on on this. The up side is that there may eventually be traffic warning systems that don't depend on co-operative targets(ones equipped with some sort of beacon).
