I can see the problem for hang/paragliders and ultralights which operate under some strict arbitrary weight limit but gliding has pretty much shot itself in the foot over that one. If the authorities ever find out that glider pilots are installing high current drain colour flight computers which draw at least as much as a transponder and their rationale is "I just installed a bigger battery to run it", all credibility will be lost. The bigger problem will be keeping stuff running with typical installation standards. The authorities will fix this easily by demanding that the power system and transponder be installed by a certified avionics shop. Read expense. Of course the rest of your instruments might also work properly and keep working.
