Carl,

Further to that: we had our power plane painted a couple of years ago. The topcoat is PU. The painter put the top coat on not long after the PU undercoat had dried. This promotes a better bond between the undercoat and topcoat. The wings are fiberglass skins. The paint is hanging on well after 2 1/2 years.

Carl,

I thought the Puchacz was already painted in PU. The Jantar Std 2 s were. I've never heard of cracked finish on a Puch and they've been around long enough for that to happen if they were finished in Vorgelat. Unlikely they were Schwabellack finished gliders.

You only need to remove ALL the gelcoat if it was cracked. Otherwise sand smooth with quite coarse paper, work down to a finer grit before repainting. If overspraying PU start with finer grit as you don't have much thickness to work with.

Consult paint manufacturer about recommended undercoating.

Ignore DMcD, he's trying to be funny.

Puchacz, Blanik, Puchatec etc. The recommended materials and
techniques for refinishing these aircraft are described in Francois
Blanchard's definitive work "Construction and Navigation of the Aerial
Steamer" (pub Putnams, 1876.)

The best modern equivalent would be a 300mm paint roller and a can of
Porter's Antique White Matt limestone wash.
