Good luck indeed with the driver's licence medical. Better make sure you are allowed to fly the tug on it first. It comes with significant restrictions.

It also doesn't change the medical standards for a PPL in any significant way. The "driver's licence medical" appears to be one which is used for heavy transport not private cars.

Your GP may want to look at his medical liability insurance before issuing one as it may not cover anything aviation related if he isn't a DAME.

A real "driver's licence medical" would be like the RAAus where if you hold a car licence with no medical restrictions you can fly. This CASA one is a stupid CASA con job.

A rational medical standard would be a car licence as above, you are required to tell any passengers before flight that if if you are incapacitated in the air they'd better be able to land the aircraft themselves.

The risk you impose on innocent third parties due to medical incapacitation in a car is far, far greater than in a light aircraft.

As for

"In reality they are a bunch of bumbling, self serving bureaucrats " , you just described the public service.

Hi Ted, if your main / only aim is to fly the tug, there is an alternate holding a class 2 medical - the Rec Pilots Licence for which CASA exemption (Ex 68/12) allows you to fly solo with certain restrictions. See <http://www.casa.gov.au/scripts/nc.dll?WCMS:STANDARD::pc=PC_100908>http://www.casa.gov.au/scripts/nc.dll?WCMS:STANDARD::pc=PC_100908 You are required to undergo a Drivers Licence Medical - Aviation (DLMA) examination by a GP. Once you have done this, copies of the paperwork are submitted to CASA electronically. (The Licencing bureaucrats are not involved!!)
Good luck, Bill

When our business went under over 20 years ago, finances precluded flying and my medical expired. During this period I developed rheumatoid arthritis, probably stress induced, but it had gone into remission with no symptoms remaining. When renewing my licence I had simply forgotten about it. Our then GP joined the group where the medical examiner works, casa were told and made questionable demands. Demands including reports from the rheumatologist I had last visited in the previous millennia and regular blood tests. Any attempt by myself or our GP to put matters into perspective met with the same form letter; no explanation or reason. They did however accept a statement from the GP as to my flexibility but put me on a 12 month cycle; subject to their review of the authorised medical examiner's decision.
