Yes but you do have to read the manual. About 6 pages is relevant to operation. It helps if pilots and instructors actually understand cross country theory which hasn't changed in the 60 or so years since it was properly worked out. Our varios are designed on the basis of cross country theory and provide the all information you need to implement it. Any club glider used for cross country or cross country training needs a vario like this if your mission is to train XC capable pilots.

DDSC and Kingaroy have club gliders equipped with B500s and B800s. The B800 is a B500 with a log scale and many small improvements. B500 owners may have their B500s modified to B800 or B600 (linear scale - replaces B500) standard.

We also make instruments (B300, B400, B700, B900) suitable as backups or for gliders whose mission is primary training or local soaring. These implement some or all of the climb mode features of the B500/B600/B800.

Here's what an aerospace industry professional who worked in cockpit design had to say about the B500/B600/B800 (it was an unsolicited opinion in a reply solicited by another manufacturer). "When it comes to deciding to leave a thermal, the Borgelt is exceptional - never look down, the LEDs give you what you need. As you straighten out, averager/integrator numbers are just out of line of sight on the Glareshield Controller and Display, and its knob is ready to accept your MacCready command. As the glide progresses the Borgelt's "performance Index" guide to bugs settings is quick and easy. In the glide, the Borgelt's LED speed cues again mean no need to look down." and "A B500 with GCD was the last nav/vario I flew behind regularly and, truly, my favourite overall. The combination of the GCD and bright LEDs gave me what I needed without spending time 'head-down'." " I am expecting the Brand X audio to be like the Borgelt B500, but without the cleverly thought out duty cycle changes and peripherally visible bright LEDs that give me the information I need in a different way."

You can send the data to a colour moving map. SeeYou Mobile, WinPilot, XCSoar and LK8000 support data input from the B800 (or B600 which is the same but with linear display and even B50s). However, the B800 has an internal glide/nav/wind computer which works very well (including around a turnpoint) so the colour map is mainly useful for a task overview with AATs, airspace boundaries and maybe Flarm overview. You really should not need to do much more than zoom and unzoom the display. Our glide algorithms have a long successful history going back to the B25 glide computer in 1982.

We're working on improvements and upgrades to the B800 software all the time. There will be another for the GCD shortly. The last one implemented the ability to take the card out of the GCD at briefing and put the task for the day on one of the databases (there are 10) and step through the start and turnpoints with one button push at a time without scrolling.

Dynamis, the long sought after Total Energy vario without sensitivity to horizontal gusts is in the final stages of development (it certainly works - we've shown that) and will be able to be added to the B600 and B800. This will be a "must have" for serious competition pilots.

Could anyone with experience using a Borgelt B 800 vario advise if it's suitable for use in a club glider?

thanks,

Greg.
