Phillip Wills used something like this in the 1954 (?) worlds didn't he? When faced with a narrow gap in an alpine ridge through which he had to pass and a low cloud almost obscuring it, he took out his stopwatch and started a series of beats along the ridge and climbed up into the cloud. When he judged that he'd gained enough height to miss the rocks, he turned and went through the gap… into a terrible wave rotor. I think it was after this experience that MacCready, who won the comp, stopped competitive flying.
