Paul Maccready won the 1956 World's, St Yan,
France. His USA teammate was Bill Ivans who died
in a Nimbus 4DM at Minden some years ago along
with a former FAA administrator and naval aviator, Don Engen.

Phillip Wills used something like this in the 1954 (?) worlds didn't
he? When faced with a narrow gap in an alpine ridge through which he
had to pass and a low cloud almost obscuring it, he took out his
stopwatch and started a series of beats along the ridge and climbed up
into the cloud.
When he judged that he'd gained enough height to miss the rocks, he
turned and went through the gapÂ… intoo a terrible wave rotor. I think
it was after this experience that MacCready, who won the comp, stopped
competitive flying.
