Somewhat typically for James May, the glider was the type that he would have made as a kit in the 60's… so it was a wood and fabric glider of fairly traditional type. After the performance of this was discovered to be fairly ordinary. they extended the wings and used a different section to improve the performance. So I doubt the performance at best was over 20:1.
