They flew from Barnestable to Lundy (about 35km) equivalent to across the English Channel (which they couldn't get permission for). The launch height was about 9000 feet so they achieved at 12 or 13:1. From memory they did have a tailwind to get there, but did it with some height in hand so probably about 12:1ish.

It was definitely a show worth watching.

would have made as a kit in the 60's… so it was a wood and fabric
glider of fairly traditional type. After the performance of this was
discovered to be fairly ordinary. they extended the wings and used a
different section to improve the performance. So I doubt the
performance at best was over 20:1.

Nevertheless, for anyone who ever made a balsa glider, I agree that it
was very interesting.
