I've helped with this on a couple of gliders. This was back in the
days of VHS camcorders! Lots of lead ballast weights required. The
answer to the legalities question back then was essentially "ignorance
is bliss".
In today's terms, you can get field approval if you want to go that
route. Certainly in USA, if an EXP aircraft a logbook entry should be
all that's required. How many field approvals or even logbook entries
are done for YouTube videos? My guess is none.
We used ~75mm tufts. Be prepared: Many factory gliders will provide
some depressing "snake charming" effects on the wing root and fuselage
tufts.
Fixing the wing root is a huge improvement. The LS4 had one of the
first decent factory wing root fairings, but the LS4 and ASW20 were
vastly improved by adding more of a fillet including trailing edge and
forward of the leading edge. On ASW20 this required removing the inboard
end of the flap and bonding it to the wing to accommodate the trailing
edge fairing, and modifying the trailer for the deeper chord at the root.
The Schempp-Hirth "A" fuselage is an easier mod with the bit of wing
already sticking out of the fuselage.
Test flight after LS4 wing root mod: Rick Wagner in his modified LS4a
and myself in a less modified LS4a climbed together. He was full of
ballast and I was dry, achieving similar climbs. Of course Rick
embarrassed me in cruise.
Doesn't Streifeneder have an STC'd wing root fairing for your glider,
Adam?

G'day all,
Has anyone got any experience or thoughts on wool tuft testing a wing root?
Does wing loading matter?
What wool lengths & thickness is best?
How many?
What pattern?
Cheers,
