be predicated on a misconception
that "preserve the literal value of the following character" is specifying
something to do with field splitting. It is not, it is specifying how
backslash escaping works. Disregarding line continuation, the only
character that is special is backslash itself, so the only effect that
"preserve the literal value of the following character" has is to require
that if the input contains \\ then the result is a single \.

You have a point about character v. byte and we should address that. We
should probably reword in terms of backslash only having any effect if the
following byte is backslash, newline, or the delimiter specified with -d.
