Minutes of the 28th August 2025 Teleconference Austin-1467 Page 1 of 1
Submitted by Andrew Josey, The Open Group. 30th August 2025
Attendees:
Andrew Josey, The Open Group
Nick Stoughton, USENIX, ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 22 OR
Eric Ackermann, CISPA
Geoff Clare, The Open Group
Mark Brown
Eric Blake, Red Hat, The Open Group OR
Haelwenn Monnier, The Open Group
* General business
We confirmed the calendar for upcoming meetings, the next meeting
is September 11th.
On progress of the standard through the PSDO process Andrew reported
that ISO had requested an A4 copy of the standard from IEEE. (This
is just a paper size change and does not impact layout)
* Carried Forward
Bug 1927: Add sponge utility
https://www.austingroupbugs.net/view.php?id=1927
[Action to Eric B] Start a 30-day request for comments on whether The Open
Group should sponsor the addition of this interface.
glibc realloc() behavior
[Action to Eric B] - respond to the thread and invite Alejandro to
open a bug against POSIX if we still need to address wording issues
Update 2025-06-26: discussion on mailing lists is still ongoing;
EricB or Alejandro will open a bug soon
* New Business
EricB provided an update on the glibc realloc() behavior.
Update 2025-08-28:
The WG14 meeting this week discussed Alejandro's proposal:
https://www.open-std.org/jtc1/sc22/wg14/www/docs/n3621.txt
2 straw polls were taken for direction for C2Y:
- should C2Y remove the C23 undefined behavior of realloc on size 0 and
replace it with tighter semantics to always attempt allocation on size 0,
returning NULL only on allocation failure (no consensus)
- should C2Y add a new interface intended to replace realloc, where
applications that want to avoid UB can easily opt in to the replacement instead
of realloc (strong consensus, requires Alejandro to revise his paper before the
next WG14 meeting)
