Hello Claire,
Right click on the first item in the new list and select the option
"Restart Numbering". That should do the trick.
If I find some time I have somewhere on the computer an OOoAuthors
keyboard layout and if I am not mistaken I have a keyboard shortcut for
this (as well as for the majority of the OOoXXXXX styles, both para and
character).
