Believe me, there is a big difference!
The so called "wikispam" can be a real problem and usually is performed by spambots. The simple request for membership can greatly reduce the modifications made by spambots.

Yes Nicu I agree. Let's not open the door on that flood please.... I think the biggest problem is there are several managers and sometimes none of us are around to give them the author role. Which takes us back to the mentoring issues. Maybe we can find some way to have a set manager "available" for a week or two then the next two weeks someone else, etc. who would be in charge of making sure we greet the new authors and make their transition a smooth one.
