I've just made a small change in Chapter 1, "What is OpenOffice.org?" in the Getting Started book. On page 9, under "Minimum Requirements" it said: "Some OpenOffice.org features require Java. You can get the latest version from Sun at http://java.sun.com/j2se "

I changed this to read:
"Some OpenOffice.org features (wizards and the database component) use Java. To use those features, you need to have the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) installed on your computer. You can get the latest version from http://www.java.com/. "

As OOo can be compiled with GCJ/GCC 4.x this is not necessarily true anymore. Of course, for the foreseeable future all builds coming from Sun will need JRE but expect the ones coming from 3-rd parties to not need it (Fedora does not need JRE, AFAIK Ubuntu will also not need JRE in the next version etc.) The question is: our documentation is made for OOo as built by Sun and distributed from http://openoffice.org or is a general documentation for OOo?

I should acknowledge my bias: I don't feel comfortable advertising a proprietary software when Free/Open alternatives are available.

Good point, Nicu. I was correcting the bit about Java but I probably should have added something about the alternatives to Sun's JRE. I think at this point we are writing about the official OOo as built by Sun, but it would be good to make the user guides as general as possible.

Suggestions for better wording happily received!

Cheers, Jean
