Technically, Friends of OpenDocument Inc (FoOD) put the books on
Lulu. Linda and I are just the ones who did the work. :-)
But it is true that FoOD's management committee thinks that the
members of OOoAuthors should decide what to do with the money
raised, rather than the management committee making that decision.
I would like to see the members of OOoAuthors agree on guidelines
for use of the money, and then choose a few people (a committee?)
to make specific decisions. For example, if we agreed that money
should be spent to donate books to schools or take books to
conferences, the committee would decide which schools or
conferences and how many books to have printed.
I have an idea:
re-invest the money back into promoting the guides.
Start by buying ISBN numbers for the guides, because that will get them
into bigger outlets (Amazon). We can then donate some to schools, or
print a few and take them to conferences. We have a lot of school
contact here in the UK, so we might get a few sold here.
This way we'd have self-sustaining growth. The more copies sold the
easier it is to sell more. This would be a fantastic way to help OOo
because it is more sustainable. It won't get huge (OOo is still a niche
market) but it is a very efficient use of the money.
What do you think?
I totally agree with Daniel's proposal, for the reasons he stated.
Cheers, Jean
