These chapters are published standalone as well as part of a full
book, so we needed to choose a style that fit both situations. I
am a bit surprised that it isn't covered in either the style
guide or writer guide, but lots of things got overlooked there. I
must fix that!
When a chapter is read standalone, the style you suggest would
not make it clear that it's referring to another chapter, and the
hyperlink would not lead anywhere useful.
Normally I would include the chapter number, but those were
changing during development of the book and writing of the
individual chapter, and so we did not include.
But even without that consideration, at this point changing the
style to remove the phrase "in the chapter titled" (or the short
form "in the chapter" -- I'm happy to drop the word "titled") or
add the chapter number, would make it inconsistent with the rest
of the book.
When we revise the book in the new year, that would be a good
time to make changes like this. I have a long list of book and
consistency enhancements to be done at that time. I'll add this
to that list. And one of these days I'll compile and organise the
list and post it on the website. BTW, the revisions may be major
-- we have ideas on reorganising the sequence of chapters, for
example.
But I don't want to tackle any of that until we get a first
edition of the other books done.
