The proposal (subject of this thread) was to move subscribers from this list ([email protected]) to a new list under the oooauthors.org domain. That's ok. In fact I prefer Mailman lists :) What is not ok, is to automatically assume that the subscriber list should be automatically transferred to the new list.

Please explain why you think this is not okay. I honestly do not see what the problem might be. To me it would be the same list, just on a
different server, and therefore moving the entire list of subscribers
at once would be a service to the members of the list rather than an
imposition. What am I missing?

People can and do set up lists, but it is only the owner that can/should
bulk subscribe existing subscribers and move archives. If the archives
are public or a subscriber has them in-tact, then often you can merge
them into an archive for the new list.

- The owner of the list is OpenOffice.org, not subscribers to this list.

- It is a courtesy if not a law (in some countries) to be able to opt-in.

What is usual, is if and when you are ready to set up a new list, a
message is sent to the existing list to invite subscribers to the new list.

Jacqueline
