I have to say that I do not completely agree. I think that we should
first see if the issues with the CC can be resolved before we "run
away". I believe that the mail server issues should not be resolved
(both hardware and software upgrades), so that should not now be an
issue.
I really believe that "moving" the mailing list could split this very
productive community.
Well, you know I disagree :) I don't see how changing the mailing
list would be such a catastrophic event. It's just a server you send
emails to. Second, while Andre has done a great job at representing
OOoAuthors in the OOo Council, it does not look like the council's
decision will change. Finally, I don't see why last week's server
update should fix the list problems that haven't been solved in years.
Though I'm no expert, it looks to me that the technical problems are
fairly fundamental (using the same engine to run CVS, the website,
IssueZilla, the code repository and the mailing lists).
The benefits of moving seem great, and the drawbacks small. There's no
reason why changing mailing list should be a big problem. Changing
mailing list will not keep us from working with the rest of the
community, or addressing Andre's concerns (e.g. PDL), etc.
Cheers,
Daniel.
I guess my concern is we've had the same mailing list issues since I've
been around and we are just now deciding to change? With all that is
going on with the CC and Authors I think a move at this point could send
the wrong message and add more fuel to the fire.
Is there anyone at OOo we can address the list issues with or CPH can
look at?
