That sounds like a personal generalisation, although I would agree with you
about points/picas, but I suspect that this would not appeal to most
non-typographical users of a general purpose word processor.

It should be a sans serif typeface and Arial is already defined above, so
it seems appropriate here? I'm using 9pt Bold and it still reads fairly
well at 60% reduction in size (Lulu books).
The serif vs. sans serif preferences seem to be cyclical. At present, the
sans serif may be more prevalent. But after a while, tastes will change and
serif may win out again.
Why would you think it's a question of taste?
Has anybody commented on the new MS fonts used during the past year or two?
One of them--Segoe UI <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Segoe_UI>--is named after
an arterial street near where I lived in Madison WI.
It's a commercial font apparently unavailable without Vista or Office 2007, so
how is it relevant to this discussion?
