Somebody--see if this file works with your OOo. It works fine with
oXygen--its creator. Other XML files seem to work with my v. 2.3.

File:
http://oooauthors.org/en/authors/userguide2/writer/feedback/100_Ch1.xml/
download

It opened rather quickly in my 2.3.0 RC1 on Linux with the "raw data" showing. When I tried to open it in Sea Monkey, I also got the "raw data" which Sea Monkey called the document tree. Their term is probably the correct one. Here is the error message in Sea Monkey: "This XML file does not appear to have any style information associated with it." This may explain the problem.

That particular file doesn't list the DTD info at the start. It's commented out... I was going to install a dual-purpose tag whereby the file would find the DTD (a DocBook 4.1.2 variant, in this case) via the Internet without its local version being available--but forgot to do so.

However, the same file opened a day later on oXygen without its freezing. Having Writer freeze because of some shortcomings with an XML file seems to be poor planning. It should time out or something other than having OOo aborted with the Task Manager.

OXygen or other XML editors probably insert a default DTD when that info is lacking. OTOH, OOo apparently goes into a version of an infinite loop--a perpetual wait phase.
