I can't think of any disadvantages.
I've also created subfolders under User Guide 3 for contributor
resources and for each of the books. Please put any files you create
for OOo3.x in these folders, NOT in subfolders under User Guide 2. And
feel free to create subfolders under the book folders for Feedback,
Published, or whatever you need.

A major drawback with version 3.0 is the same bug that version 2.4.0
has. So, those "older" chapters might have to be totally redone or
written brand new as long as those v 2.4 or 3.0 bugs exist. In any
event, I wouldn't feel comfortable editing in anything newer than v
2.3.1 until those bugs are repaired.
And has anybody done any PDF import as yet? Anything written about that?
There's nothing in the online Help.
