For the OOo 3 chapters, I think we should change the title page in some way to make it very easy for readers to see which major version
of OOo the chapter is for.

Some random thoughts about possibilities: 1) Easiest is to change the
"OpenOffice.org" at the bottom right of the title page to "OpenOffice.org 3", and I would suggest doing that even if we make other changes.

Agreed.

But is that enough?

Not quite.

2) Using a different graphic (in place of the stylised seagulls) would be a lot more obvious. Easy to do once someone chooses (or designs) a replacement graphic. A variation on the seagulls might be
best. Whatever we use, it should be closely related to the official
artwork. The Art Project may have something we can use.

Too fussy and would need re-doing for version 4 and later.

3) We could consider using a slightly different graphic for the title
pages of each book, along with the book's name as on the current page.

4) Another possibility is to put a big but very pale "3" somewhere on
the title page. Perhaps in the background like a watermark, so it's
obvious but doesn't obscure other elements on the page. At this point
I don't have any idea if that would work visually or just make a mess
of the page. (This is my least favourite idea.)

The watermark '3' has an attractive subtlety to me and would be very easy to implement. It would also lend itself to later version numbers without needing to change the inherent style of the documents.
