Too fussy and would need re-doing for version 4 and later.
We changed the title page when v2.0 came out, which was what? 3 years
ago? If we get 3 years' use out of a new graphic, that doesn't seem
like a big problem to me. Note, my comment assumes choosing a graphic
that requires little or no effort to use other than inserting it into
the title page of the template. :-)
3) We could consider using a slightly different graphic for the title
pages of each book, along with the book's name as on the current page.
This suggestion of mine is much more fussy... requiring either a
different template for each book, or the author/editor of each chapter
inserting the appropriate graphic, or some sort of "automatic"
insertion... any of which seems to me to be asking for trouble. So I'm
not keen on that one.
4) Another possibility is to put a big but very pale "3" somewhere on
the title page. Perhaps in the background like a watermark, so it's
obvious but doesn't obscure other elements on the page. At this point
I don't have any idea if that would work visually or just make a mess
of the page. (This is my least favourite idea.)
The watermark '3' has an attractive subtlety to me and would be very
easy to implement. It would also lend itself to later version numbers
without needing to change the inherent style of the documents.
Any suggestion on where to put it, in relation to the other elements
on the page? Should the seagulls graphic be made smaller (easy to do)?
Thanks for the comments, Peter.
