Have you been following that bug issue with the importing of styles wiping out the ToC and possibly other items? It seems to have been around for every iteration of OOo w/o being remedied. Is this related to the Ctrl+A plus delete?

No, I haven't been following that bug issue. I never import styles so
I haven't encountered that bug myself. (I stopped importing styles
because of other problems associated with the import, the details of
which I have long forgotten.) If we start using a real (.ott) template
and use it properly, then updating styles in documents based on that
template is much easier.

I wasn't clear what I meant when I said "wipe out the ToC". I didn't
mean losing the setup in Tools > Outlining; that seems to be retained.
But at least some of the formatting and other setup in Indexes and
Tables gets lost; I'd have to check exactly what. But certainly the
writer would again have to insert the ToC and maybe do some other
stuff (instead of simply updating it).

BTW, I forgot to mention in my list of problems the loss of the
boilerplate for the copyright page -- something else that the writer would have to copy-and-paste from somewhere or (even worse) retype.

Is there something other than delete that accomplishes what we would like to happen?

What I do is manually select everything from the first OOoHeading 1 to
the end of the document and delete that. That gets rid of everything
we don't want, while retaining what we do want of the boilerplate, the
ToC, and the conditional section. BTW, I leave at least one character of the first OOoHeading 1 in place during the delete; this ensures that no weirdness creeps in, such as a newly typed heading ending up inside the conditional section (I've had that happen).

My quick way of selecting most of the body of the document (all the
way to the end is to place the cursor where I want the deletion to
start, then press Ctrl+Shift+End. If I want to retain a few tables at
the end, then it's a bit more fiddly but not much.

My MO is to suggest a problem w/o offering any clues at first (or few clues) in the hope that somebody experiments further. Try Ctrl+A and then do a Crtl+X. See what that does. Maybe that's less onerous than a simple delete. Or again, it might be other things...
