I know Marko was intending to upgrade Plone to a later version, and he
had been postponing making some changes until after the upgrade (so he
didn't have to do it twice). Perhaps when he finds time for the upgrade,
he can add CAPTCHA or some other feature at that time.
I just remembered another example. On my blog I started getting a lot of
spam. I installed a 4-character CAPTCHA. This did not eliminate the
spam, but the drop was very noticeable. I can't remember exactly, but
90% drop sounds about right.
