I did some experimentation with a simple numbered list in the
attached file. First of all, I loaded the styles from the chapter
template (version 67) to the file. Then I created the numbered list as
you see it. Using the paragraph styles for numbered list (123 and
abc), I was unable to renumber the second set of the abc list, save
it, and have the renumbering remain. This had been bugging me for
sometime.
However, I went to the List Styles and changed the Numbered1 to
match the combination of 123 and abc list styles. When I highlighted
the entire list and changed the List Style to Number1, the second list
of abc renumbered themselves without needing to use the Renumber
button. Is it possible that All of these list styles for numbered
lists is part of the problem?

I will check that myself as I was brushing up around midnight this
morning about one way FrameMaker can handle its entry into a numbered list.
One FrameMaker method is to use the introductory paragraph leading into
a numbered list to reset the number counter to zero. Thus only one list
style paragraph style would be needed for a simple numbered list.
IOW, doing a StepIntro (a special body-text paragraph that resets a
counter to zero), Step (the first numbered step 1), Step, Step...
(sounds like a dance instruction, doesn't it?). The other method would
be to do: StepFirst (a list style that resets the step counter to 1),
Step, Step, Step... The Step style is a simple counter incrementer for
both methods.
FrameMaker utilizes tags that can combine various functions that
OpenOffice may need more than one style to accomplish. However, an OOo
macro could be made to effect something different, I suppose.
