I am using OOo 3.0 since the beta version. Personally, I think the
problem is with using three different Numbered List Styles: 123, qbc, and
iii. This morning, I created a single Numbered List Style "MyNum" with level
1 using 123, level 2 using abc, and level 3 using iii. Then I created two
Paragraph Styles with MyNum listed as the numbering style: MyNum Start, and
MyNum Stop. MyNum Start has the same settings as OOoNum123 Start, and MyNum
Stop has the same settings as OOoNum123 Stop.
In writing the Introducing Base chapter, I have had similar problems
with numbered lists as I described earlier. However, this morning, I went
through what I have written so far changing all the numbered styles to MyNum
Start except for the last item in a given numbered list. It was changed to
MyNum Stop. When I saved the document and then opened it, all of the
numbered lists were exactly what they should have been. When I had used the
three numbered lists earlier, saving the file put each one back into
consecutive order from the beginning.
Thus, my conclusion: a single numbered list style will work, but using
three of them will not.
