Since version 3.0 when ODF 1.2 was adopted numbering has been a royal pain in the neck. I was hoping it was solved but actually it hasn't. The only way I know to fix the problem when it occurs is to create again the list from scratch and copy the text taking care of avoiding to copy the whole paragraph...
The problem may be fixable by ordinary means. In the template example of numbered lists, there are two problems:
A) the last numbered item shows as 1) (s.b. "4)"). I fixed this by clicking the "Numbering Off" icon three times. The first time gave me a far-left-justified paragraph, un-numbered. The second showed roman numerals. The third showed "4)", so I stopped clicking!
B) the last lettered item, just before 4), shows as "a)" (s.b. "c)"). But the Numbering icon wouldn't help, here; all it would do is change the a) to b). The real problem seems to be in the previous lettered paragraph, "b)"; having that letter duplicated was a pretty good hint. What I did was use the very top-most entry in the Styles drop-box, "clear formatting", on both the last and the "b)" paragraphs. Then I reapplied the "abcCont." style to the "b)" paragraph, and adjusted its indent; then applied "abcEnd" to the last paragraph, and adjusted that indent, too. And it all looks good, but I would definitely be afraid to add any paragraphs there!
Writer is definitely getting confused, big-time, over which internal field should be supplied for a given line, and when the fields should be updated. It'll probably stay messed up until I learn enough to look at the code myself. I'm working on that.
