I have the same problems with any SMP kernel > 2.0.30 - I only run SMP
kernels - after I switched to 3Com 3c905B Cyclone card which is connected to a
autosensing 10/100 MBit network switch using a Slackware 3.5 distributions. I
even upgraded all network tools but still no cure. Since everything is fine
after a few seconds and the kernel is stable, I believe it has to do with the
initialization of the ethernet driver.

After switching to 2.2.x kernels, even the auto negociating of the card with
the switch did not work work any more. I have to load the driver as a module and
set options to run the card at 100Mbit.

What ethernet card do you use?
