I realized the hard way how much code would need to be updated, and 
opted for a simpler "80/20" like approach:

https://github.com/autotest/autotest/pull/119

Note: Smoke tested with default F16 test on kvm and libvirt, output 
appears to be nearly identical to pre-merge (a good sign).
