I really like Mercurial, but seeing as I've never contributed code and don't
see myself doing so in the near term, I think you should use whichever VCS
you prefer.

For us that prefer something other than subversion, both Git, Mercurial, and
Bazaar all have support for svn, either natively or with plug-ins. So we can
use our favorite DVCS locally and push to the upstream svn server just fine.

On the other hand, Subversion does have a long known random commit
corruption bug, which makes an old commit and a few after it unusable. We've
been hit with it at work here, but so far the commits affected are old
enough that we probably won't ever need to check them out. That might be
reason enough to stay away from it, though. (More details here:
