Well I've changed AM_PROG_LIBTOOL to AC_PROG_LIBTOOL which should
be the right name - but if this is wrong for you we may change it back

try to replace it in your configure.in (line 73) together
with AC_DISABLE_STATIC -> AM_DISABLE_STATIC

and let me know if this is will fix your problem

we try - but it's hard to know about every version of automake floating around
- thus we use bugreports to be noticed about problems :)
(sorry I'll not install RH6.0, 6.1, 6.2  7.0 7.1 7.2  Suse XXX Slackware YYY
just for this - I'm not paid for this :)
Also I think we already managed to make it easily compilable for most
of distribution - usualy the problems remains when user have installed
something for themselfs...

we know about this error - but so far noone has been so kind to let me
know about some fix for this problme

we are calling configure of the original package - so
you have configure for avifile - configure for libmmxnow (which should
be completely avifile independent) and configure for libmad - those
will have this library installed will be saved of this configure call
(as Debian now provides libmad as a package)
