Hello all,

I'm new to this list as well as the whole DivX ;-) thing in general so please
bear with me. I recently installed the vcr package on my Debian Linux machine
to capture television in the DivX format. It works great, no problems
whatsoever. It's after the capture that I'm having problems.

What are people out there using for editing DivX files?

Here's an example of what I am currently doing. I record 60 minutes of
television. I need to remove the commercials so I use mplayer to flip through
the file & write down the start & end times of all the commercials. Then,
with avirecompress, I have it create a sample config file, I then tweak the
file by hand as I cannot get the GUI interface to properly cut video & audio
so that they are in sync.

After tweaking the file I use avirecompress with the config file(s) option to
copy the file into the pieces I want. At this point, I would like to join the
file back together but I find if I use "avicat *.avi", the resulting output
file is really messed up, the wrong audio plays for a video segment, the
video cuts from the first segment to the second at random, all bad things.

So currently, I leave it cut, burn it on a cd, & use a playlist to watch it.

If in parts of my recording, there is significant frame loss at a certain
part, avirecompress will abort when it gets to that part rather than copying
it "as is". More bad things.

Does anyone have some suggestions to help me make this process a little
better. Is there better programs for chopping & joining files?

Thanks,
-Pete
