That wouldn't explain why is "X" taking so much time.  X isn't multithreaded.

Whem I pass high postprocessing levels to mplayer, it easily eats 98%CPU, so
this is DEFINITELY aviplay-specific. It used to work fine with aviplay as well
sometime in the past, but I upgraded so much stuff since then including
hardware...

Nevertheless, I think there might be something to it, perhaps the control
window of aviplay is doing something to the display, such as calling sync too
often or something like that?
