Ohh - this is the reason :)

Mplayer is probably using YV12 colorspace - while aviplay uses YUY2 - which
allows modification of postprocessing options like brightness...

Of course the price is high - at least one extra memory transfer and
about 90KB larger images to tranfer (might look funny but it's not as
avarage PC has very poor memory transfare rates) - on the other hand
someone likes to watch IDLE %CPU and others to have brigthness control
and I belong to the second group :)
