I think it's something else - you have to calc accumulated total time
for both - player & xfree together as mplayer is probably doing a copy
of image to xfree server itself you should see higher CPU usage of
mplayer - while aviplay is using SDL and it's using two XFree queue to
access XFree server - also XFree behaves differently when it's by more threads.

Another thing is that TOP isn't the best thing to measure performance
is it is showing current status, but what you really want to see
is an average over some period of time.

And also - be sure that Direct checkbox is checked and you are using YUV.

No windows control take virtualy 0% of CPU time

Anyway - please check current version of avifile and let me know
if you still have the same problem so we could try to figure out
something more about it. Though the current version has some
problems in some aspects it should be giving better results here.
There has been made some modification to support various numbers
of screen buffers so hopefully it will be possible to use mplayer's
vidix drivers (yet I think I'll need CVS access to their tree once I'll
decide to use it)
