Using avifile-0.7.7-fr2 (the precompiled rpm I could find for Linux RedHat 7.2), I get after installing this and binaries-010122.zip, binaries-diff.zip to get the Win32 dll's the error:

Putting either the windows 95 or the windows 2000 msrle32.dll in /usr/lib/win32 also doesn't work: With windows 2000 msrle32: <Codec keeper> : /usr/lib/avifile0.7/divx4.so: A/V 0/2 <Codec keeper> : /usr/lib/avifile0.7/audiodec.so: A/V 6/0 <Codec keeper> : /usr/lib/avifile0.7/ac3pass.so: A/V 1/0 <Win32 loader> : Using Win32 dll library: msrle32.dll Called unk_GetModuleHandleW Segmentation fault With windows 95 msrle32 I get the messages below (NO crash), but there is a black display...: <Codec keeper> : /usr/lib/avifile0.7/ac3pass.so: A/V 1/0 <Win32 loader> : Using Win32 dll library: msrle32.dll <Win32 video decoder> : VideoDecoder Size 1064 <Win32 video decoder> : Decoder does not support upside-down RGB frames <Codec keeper> : MS RLE video decoder created <Win32 video decoder> : WARNING: ICDecompressBegin() failed ( shouldn't happen ), hr=-2 (Bad Format)) <renderer> : SDL Video driver: x11 <renderer> : Created surface: 381 x 381 32 bits <renderer> : Creating YUV overlay 381x381, fourcc 0x32595559 (YUY2) <renderer> : XV port: 50 <renderer> : XV attribute: XV_COLORKEY GS <0, 16777215> <renderer> : XV attribute: XV_BRIGHTNESS GS <-64, 63> <renderer> : XV attribute: XV_SATURATION GS <0, 31> <renderer> : XV attribute: XV_DOUBLE_BUFFER GS <0, 1> <Win32 video decoder> : WARNING: Unsupported color space 0x32595559 (YUY2) <Win32 video decoder> : WARNING: ICDecompressBegin() failed ( shouldn't happen ), hr=-2 (Bad Format)) <renderer> : Loading subfont: "-adobe-helvetica-medium-r-normal--*-160-100-100-p-*-iso8859-*" <renderer> : Failed to open X11 font <Player> : Player started <AVI reader> : NODIRECT <AVI reader> : w:381 h:381 bpp:24 0x00000000 - 1:4 (0x80f0720) <AVI reader> : w:381 h:381 bpp:24 0x00000000 - 2:4 (0x80909c8) <AVI reader> : w:381 h:381 bpp:24 0x00000000 - 3:4 (0x8092780) <AVI reader> : w:381 h:381 bpp:24 0x00000000 - 4:4 (0x80f1730) Please help. This codec is a codec of choice as it provides rather artefact free compression for grayscale images with an acceptable compression factor.
