To be fair, Georg-Johann has been *very* eager recently to integrate
all the outstanding AVR-GCC patches, including the large Xmega patch.
Unless you really need support for the very most recent AVR devices
that have been released just in the past months (and thus didn't make
it yet into a GCC release), you can get away with a stock GCC 4.7.1
these days without any further patches.
I did not mean to imply that the people involved in the avr gcc port
were slow at getting patches integrated - quite the opposite, in fact!
Patches are needed because Georg-Johann, Erik, and others get so much
done in the avr port, but it takes time to get them integrated into the
mainline gcc tree (and this is also understandable - gcc is a huge
project, covering lots of targets and hosts, and it takes time for
testing, approval, etc.).
