all the outstanding AVR-GCC patches, including the large Xmega patch.
Unless you really need support for the very most recent AVR devices

it yet into a GCC release), you can get away with a stock GCC 4.7.1
these days without any further patches.


I did not mean to imply that the people involved in the avr gcc port were slow at getting patches integrated - quite the opposite, in fact! Patches are needed because Georg-Johann, Erik, and others get so much done in the avr port, but it takes time to get them integrated into the mainline gcc tree (and this is also understandable - gcc is a huge project, covering lots of targets and hosts, and it takes time for testing, approval, etc.).
