Hey Carl, I've always had a problem with Lightwave's export...can you try this and see if it helps any?
Select all the faces and say "unweld". I don't know if it'll help you but in my case I notticed Lightwave screws the UV's up ALWAYS. the only way I was ever to get a UV map out correctly is to unweld the points connecting the faces in the UV.
