with owncanvas enabled, what about tricking the z sorting with the
screenZOffset property ?
this property will be added to the true z property during the z
sorting calculation of your engine
try to put the lowest value for the lowest cubes and let us know what
happen

This would enable more precise z sorting only for your mesh, the
rest of the scene remains with normal sorting. Try it with ownCanvas
