Well, I have had pretty decent luck with the following tools: * Flex SDK for building. * Collada format for meshes. * The Feeling Software Collada plugin, for both Maya and Max. The included parsers/exporters for either tool are pretty finicky and don't work all that well. I have used Blender and it's Collada exporter with some success in the past as well so you may want to try that, YMMV.
I don't normally spontaneously post emails about how a given tool works as expected, and suspect that is the case for most people.
