Oh just found this on the wiki about MD2 file format. Just thought
some of you guys would find it useful to know.

"However, before you dive in and commit to using MD2 for your game, be
warned, MD2 stores the vertex information as single bytes. This
results in a smaller file but loses accuracy in the model geometry.
The loss of vertex precision is noticeable when animating the model,
the shape wobbles as it moves. Therefore the format isn't the best if
your model is going to be close to the viewer for long periods.

At least i know I wasn't going mad! Definitely going to skip anything
to do with this format, I'd hope there's going to be a concerted
effort to add vertex animation in the awd file format soon :) *hint
hint*
So for now I'll plan on saving each frame out as a single collada
object then converting them using away3d into a awd files.
