I would start by getting a DAE made with at least 2 bones that affect the
geometry when moved.

Then, get this to show in away3D (can use the mario demo or other DAE
demos).

After that it is easy to target the bone and change it.

The hard, and most time consuming part will most likely be creating the
bones that modify the model the way you want. You will be able to see if the
bone is acting correctly in the 3D software (Maya, Blender etc).
