Thanks both for your input. I've now figured out that the event listeners are lost when the user clicks and drags on the globe to rotate it. When a new marker is added, they all start listening again, until you drag the globe, at which point they switch off again. I'll try to find somewhere I can put an example. In the meantime, here is the view stack:
