Menus are also generated automagicalliy, there every character could appear, for example command lists. With & we can replace it with & (util.escape) which is standard. With _ what to do with /usr/bin/lsb_release? _ is too often used. So in short i vote for my patch - at least it defines a clear "grammar" when something will happen to & - and it did not break any text which would be displayed otherwise ...
