The problem is that, when I hit my "fullscreen" key, the focused window

(It's not exactly the same as going floating; when it goes floating, it
still has window borders, but when it does this funky behavior, it has
no window borders.) I can see that the background windows expand to take
over its space as if the window had just gone floating.
Good day, Jim. A screenshot would likely be helpful for understanding
this, though I think I have a pretty good mental image based on your
description. Thanks also for your detailed report on this issue.
Is the commit g287028 that you mentioned the very last one that works
before the issue occurs? (I.e. is the one after it the offending one?)
If I understand correctly that this is just the last commit you were
on before upgrading, then it is possible to spend some time doing a
git-bisect to determine the exact commit that breaks your rc.lua. I
can then read this commit and get a good idea for what is wrong.
Also, since this is likely to be an issue with your rc.lua for the
reason you mentioned, it may be helpful for you to post that as well.
And in general, I'm a fan of yours as a computer science/philosophy
student myself.

Hi there,
I had and have the same problem. The only thing which is relevant is
that the floating windows a fullscreened well. I have a workaroung to
first make the window floating and then set it to fullscreen but it is
far from a sane way which could and should be used here. By the way,
default rc.lua shows the same behaviour for me.
Cheers,
Ignas A.
