Steve is right. Wicd is the thing you want.
To be more specific, you need wicd and wicd-gtk to be installed. Wicd is
the daemon that manages your network connections. It is better than NM
because you don't need your X server running for wicd to work. Wicd-gtk
is the graphical configuration tool like NM.
I personally prefer wicd-curses. This is a configuration tool to be used
from terminal.

I'm a new convert, so be gentle with me.
When using Gnome I got used to having NetworkManager. Now I can still
have it installed with awesome, but nm-applet is a bit heavy on the
dependencies so I'm wondering what my options are.
What I want:
1. The functionality of NetworkManager, control of and switching
between configured networks (i.e. configuring doesn't necessarily
have to be as graphical and easy as with NM).
2. An applet to make control/switch easy.
Is NM the only kid in town who offers this functionality? Will I have
to resort to nm-cli in order to stick with NM?
