nmcli works for me. It's not fancy but it works and lets me connect rather easily. You'll need something to configure NM though unless you want to do that to by hand. I have kde4 installed so I just use the System Settings app for that. Probably wouldn't be hard to create an awesome widget for showing the status of the connections. wicd may be great but i wouldnt know since I need mobile broadband support and wicd does not have that.
