I'm sorry - my humble opinion as end user... May I? :) I think, that XPS useful and should be alive.
Reasons: 1) good for novices, 2) could be useful in extremal situations to tune final output. 3) could be useful in standalone version I think, that many people, that will have needs to make not XML output (special formats like SPSS for example) will prefer XPS against to hard XSL transformations... Actually it's not important to improve it very much but it's good to continue support of XPS...
